Deep Dental Cleaning- Dental Scaling and Polishing

Keeping planned dental cleaning appointments also offers the opportunity for dental hygienist to evaluate current oral hygiene practices and give suggestions for ways for better dental care. RxCura suggests scaling and polishing, for cleaning for your teeth.

What is Dental Scaling & Polishing?

Calculus and plaque accumulation on the teeth are the cause of many diseases of teeth and gums. Plaque is sticky film of Bacteria that grows on surfaces within the mouth. If plaque is not removed regularly by tooth brushing and flossing, it hardens to create calculus (also known as tartar). Calculus consisting of bacteria, food debris and body cells that come into contact with the gums and can cause periodontal diseases such as inflammation of the gums.

Tooth cleaning is done with an ultrasonic machine, the bottom touches the teeth and ultrasonic vibrations with a frequency remove the scale on it. It is necessary to polish the teeth so that it makes a rough surface, smoother. If this is not done immediately, then the new calculus may form again. Tooth polishing is also used to increase the aesthetics of teeth.

Scaling  Polishing

How often do you need scaling?

If you have bleeding gums, swelling or redness, and bad breath, then you should contact your dentist for cleaning of your teeth. These procedures are routine dental procedure for maintaining the dental hygiene.

The frequency of dental cleaning depends on the readiness of teeth to form calculus. If there are no other problems, twice a year is enough. To have long-term effects, you should discuss with your dentist, the methods of cleansing and proper use of dental floss.

Techniques used for Scaling

Ultrasonic instruments use vibrations to eliminate deposits; these tools have metal tips that can become very hot, so a spray of water is used to keep your mouth fresh. Manual instruments remove tartar deposits with a scraping motion. Curved tips are available in many different shapes and sizes to fit into different mouth areas. Since the tips are thinner than those of ultrasonic instruments, manual instruments can remove the smaller deposits above and just below the gums to leave the teeth clean and smooth.

Techniques used for Scaling

Polishing are usually done with use of rotary power brushes that expedite the cleaning by removing stains and smoothen the surface of the tooth. Prophylactic pastes are also used that contain fluoride and calcium to help in increasing the mineral content of the enamel surface which serves to reinforce the weakened surface.

Cost of Scaling and Polishing

The scaling and polishing cost depends on the current condition of your teeth i.e. extent of cleaning required. These are basic dental procedures and are relatively cheaper. Visit frequently (twice a year) at any of the RxCura clinics to maintain your dental hygiene at affordable prices.
